A 2-0 loss against Ethiopia saw Egypt slip to last place in Group D of the AFCON qualifiers.

Wael Gomaa has criticised Egypt players for their underwhelming performance against Ethiopia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Two first-half goals won the game for Ethiopia, while the Pharaohs registered only one shot on target throughout the game.

Egypt’s newly-appointed boss, Ehab Galal, didn’t have a number of his key players due to fitness problems. However, Gomaa doesn’t believe that would be enough to justify Egypt’s performance against Ethiopia, who sit 140th in the FIFA world rankings.

“We were lucky to concede just two goals in the first half,” Gomaa told beIN Sports (via King Fut). “This is the first time I watch Egypt play like this.

“I will not criticise Ehab Galal for his first seven or eight matches but the players should be ashamed. I cannot believe the result or the performance.

“This is the same team that finished second in the Africa Cup of Nations not long ago. We just did not turn up. This is not how the team played two months ago.”

He added: “[Carlos] Queiroz made something out of nothing,” he continued. “He made this team reach heights that seemed impossible with this group of players.”
