Ronaldo missed the game at Anfield on Tuesday after his baby boy tragically passed away.

Cristiano Ronaldo has taken to social media to thank the Anfield supporters for their act of compassion in the midweek fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Portuguese missed Tuesday’s game at Anfield after he and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, announced their baby son had passed away during birth, but that his twin sister was born safely.

In a show of solidarity, Liverpool and Manchester United fans held a minute’s applause during the seventh minute of the match. Some Liverpool fans even chanted ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

“One world… One sport… One global family… Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion,” Ronaldo posted on Instagram alongside footage of the touching moment.

Liverpool won the match 4-0 in the end following Mohamed Salah’s brace and goals from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, returned to training on Wednesday and was again seen at Manchester United’s Carrington base on Thursday.

The Red Devils have also announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new permanent manager for next season. They’ll next take a trip to the Emirates to face top-four rivals Arsenal in the Premier League this coming Saturday.
