Cristiano Ronaldo reacts to his latest world record

The Portugal skipper became the first player in men’s football history to score at five World Cups on Thursday.

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he is ‘very proud’ to become the first men’s football player to score at five World Cups.

On Thursday, after a turbulent few months, which led to his departure from Manchester United this week following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo got back to doing what he does best: scoring goals.

The superstar attacker scored a second-half penalty to lead Portugal to a 3-2 win over Ghana in their Group H opener, making more World Cup history at the same time.

“It was a beautiful moment, my fifth World Cup. We won, we started [on the front] foot, it’s a very important win,” Ronaldo said at a post-match press conference at Stadium 974.

“We know that in these competitions the first match is crucial, but also the record to be the first player to score in five World Cups, it’s something that makes me very proud, and I’m very happy that the team got a result in a tough game.

“The most important step was that we won; it was a week that finished a chapter, it’s closed, and now we want to start off on a good foot.

“We won, I could help my team, and all the rest does not matter.”

Ronaldo also won the Man of the Match award for the seventh time in his World Cup career, which is more than any other player has managed in the competition.

The Portugal captain and the team will return to action on Monday for their next Group H match against Uruguay. Three points will secure a spot in the last-16 stage of the World Cup.
