Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday, with Ronaldo seemingly disagreeing with the final rankings.

Several footballing figures have criticized the final rankings of this year’s Ballon d’Or awards. Lionel Messi won the prize for the seventh time in his career, extending his record for most Ballon d’Or wins.

Following Messi on Ballon d’Or’s all-time charts is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the prestigious award five times.

Messi won this year’s award in a close race with Robert Lewandowski after claiming the Copa America trophy with Argentina.

The critics argue that Messi’s performances in La Liga and the Champions League were not Ballon d’Or worthy. By contrast, both Lewandowski and Ronaldo has displayed incredible form at club level in the current year.

What was the post?

On Wednesday, a Ronaldo fan account shared a post about the award, accusing Messi of “stealing” the prize. The Manchester United superstar liked the post and left a comment, which read: “facts”.

The Instagram post reads as follows (via Metro):

“43 goals in the year, 6 goals in 5 games in this Champions League, all decisive and a guy who, regardless of age, continues to work miracles and is the guy who most impresses the world most often,

“They still put the guy in 6th… Do you really think that 5 guys did more than him in the year? Never.

“For Cristiano to win this prize he has to be 300% unquestionable. It’s no use scoring the most beautiful bike of the year, being champion of everything by club, top scorer of everything and scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup, they still provide a way to take his prize.

“With Messi, it’s the other way around. He can do a low-key season, way below, they’ll always find a way to favour him and give him the award.

“Steal. Dirt. Shame. It’s just unfortunate. Who saw it, saw it. Those who are intelligent enough know who deserve the truth.”

Ronaldo will now have to win three more Ballon d’Or wins to break Messi’s record. The Portuguese superstar has shown time and time again that he is eager to challenge what seems impossible. However, at the age of 36, this might be the challenging goal you can set as a footballer.
