Antonio Conte remained in an upbeat mood over Inter Milan’s progress after settling for a goalless draw at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Inter settled for a 0-0 draw in the second game of their Champions League campaign away to Group B leaders Shakhtar on Tuesday.

The Nerazzurri were the dominant side and had several chances to break the deadlock in both halves through Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez. But, in the end, there was simply no way past the Shakhtar defense.

The hosts were mostly content to sit deep and attempt to frustrate their opponents on the night. Although Tete missed a late opportunity to grab an unexpected winner.

Despite drawing for the second game in a row, however, Conte was satisfied with his team’s performance overall.

“I think there are positive aspects about this game,” the Inter boss told Sky Sport Italia.

“We played with the right intensity, with the right commitment, as a big team. We dominated and we were not lucky. We had some chances to score, we played a very good game in both phases.

“Don’t forget Shakhtar have important technical qualities, we are sorry because we would deserve to win the game. We are on the right way, the mentality is a good one.”

Conte added: “Don’t forget this was the fourth game in ten days.

“I am not looking for excuses, but we began this cycle of matches with six people who had caught Covid, plus the injured ones, which means we had to do without eight players.

“This game is proof of the good work we are doing, also with the technical staff.”
