Chelsea gave a ‘completely abnormal’ display at home against Sevilla, says Frank Leboeuf, who lamented their lack of cutting edge.

Chelsea’s Group E opener in the Champions League ended in a goalless stalemate against Sevilla at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Frank Lampard’s side couldn’t make home advantage count in a game that offered few clear-cut chances. They even trailed Sevilla in terms of possession, number of passes, and corner-kicks.

But summer signing Edouard Mendy proved his money’s worth in goal by brilliantly denying Nemanja Gudelj’s header after it deflected off Kurt Zouma. He also denied Lucas Ocampos just before the break.

But while Lampard was understandably pleased to bag a clean sheet, Leboeuf believes the Blues’ lack of cutting edge in attack on the big stage was disappointing.

“I don’t see what I want to see, I don’t see the players speeding up the game and doing something, changing rhythm,” the former Chelsea defender told ESPN.

“I saw Mendy is much better than Kepa. It’s a clean sheet, especially after the first half, Sevilla had around 65 per cent possession of the ball away from home at Chelsea in the Champions League, that’s completely abnormal.

“I’m pleased to see Thiago Silva because he’s a talented player that brings something very special to the defense and makes it more solid, but after that, I don’t see somebody in the midfield, especially offensively, somebody doing something special to create something.

“They’re looking for each other, not knowing each other and we saw clearly nothing. The best chance was after an hour from [Joan] Jordan from a corner kick because no Chelsea player was marking him and he had a fantastic volley, that’s the only thing that I saw.

“Half a chance from [Timo] Werner, another half a chance from Zouma, that’s it, Champions League guys, Champions League. We want to see something soon.”

Chelsea will now head to Old Trafford on Saturday for a Premier League clash with Manchester United.
