Los Blancos missed the chance to move back level on points with local rivals and table-toppers after their winning streak came to an end.

It was a disappointing night for Real Madrid as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Elche– a team deep down in the bottom half of the La Liga table – on Wednesday.

Luka Modric, rather unconventionally, headed his side in front by reacting first after Marco Asensio’s audacious effort smashed off the underside of the bar.

Elche equalized from the penalty spot seven minutes after the break, and there was no change of scoreline after that.

Los Blancos couldn’t extend their run to seven straight wins against a side who started the evening without a win in their last eight league games and outside of the relegation zone only on goal difference

“We wanted to take the three points, but it couldn’t be,” a disappointed Casemiro said post-match, via Marca.

“We started off well and we had chances to score more goals, but with one play they scored a goal. We fought, but it was difficult to find spaces. They all sat back, although we knew that we were going to face that.

Karim Benzema was allegedly held in the box but no penalty was awarded to Real Madrid. Also, a penalty initially given to them was waved off after consultation with VAR.

“We are not talking about the referees,” Casemiro added. “They are here to do the best they can.

“Other people are here to talk about VAR and about them. We talk about football.”
