The Frenchman enters this weekend’s Champions League final needing at least three goals against Liverpool to break his former Real Madrid teammate’s record.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals in a single UEFA Champions League campaign is within Karim Benzema’s sights.
Breaking the record, though, will be a big ask – even for the Real Madrid frontman.
Benzema is on 15 goals in 11 Champions League games for this season. Therefore, he must score three or more goals in Saturday’s final against Liverpool to surpass his former teammate in the UEFA record books.
Karim Benzema has scored 15 goals in the Champions League this season, the joint third most of any single-season CL campaign:

Benzema focused on team glory
For Benzema, however, the chance of winning the Champions League for a fifth time with Real Madrid will take precedence over Ronaldo’s record.
“Records will always exist, and they are there to be broken,” he told UEFA.com.
“For me, what matters the most is to give it my all on the pitch to help my team win; if I can score or assist goals, that’s important, but the most important thing is to step on the pitch and win the game.”
On his favorite Champions League goal for this season, Benzema added: “They’re all good and important. The most beautiful is maybe the third goal against PSG or the penalty against Manchester City, but the header against Chelsea was good too because it was a beautiful play.”
