Serge Gnabry returning a positive coronavirus test has thrown Bayern Munich’s Champions League showdown against Atletico Madrid into doubt.

Gnabry was tested positive for COVID-19 on the eve of Bayern Munich’s encounter with Atletico Madrid. In such a turn of events, concerns about the possibility of his other teammates contracting the virus have emerged.

Gnabry has, therefore, joined injured Leroy Sane on the sidelines.

But, the Germany international had been training with the rest of the squad regularly before confirmation of his positive result arrived yesterday.

He was even pictured in close physical contact with David Alaba. As a consequence, the Bavarians’ players have undergone a round of additional testing today to make sure no outbreak within the squad has taken place.

Results are expected at around 3 pm local time when the final decision on whether the match will proceed as scheduled should be made.

According to The Independent, UEFA regulations say that events will take place as designed if both sides have at least 13 players fit, including one goalkeeper.

Bayern Munich should begin their Champions League campaign at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Hansi Flick’s men won the competition in memorable fashion back in 2019/20, winning all 11 matches en route to lifting the trophy.
