The Catalans have been blessed with a young duo at the centre of their midfield line.

Barcelona manager Xavi believes Pedri and Gavi are better than him and Andres Iniesta at 20 years old.

The Barcelona duo continued their partnership throughout Spain’s World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Both players started all four of La Roja’s matches in the tournament under Luis Enrique. Gavi and Pedri’s first World Cup ended with a shock defeat against Morocco in the last-16 round.

But Xavi believes the Spanish duo have developed quicker than their Barcelona predecessors.

“Me at 20 years old and Andres at 20 years old were not at the level of Pedri or Gavi,” Xavi said. “How Gavi competes, the passion he puts in… we were not at his level.

“We have very young players. Eric [Garcia], Pedri, Ansu [Fati], Gavi… Frenkie [de Jong] is young. We have Barca for the present and for the future.”

He added: “Gavi has played practically everything. Ansu is a talent, but perhaps we are asking too much of them.”

Barcelona failed to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League despite their busy transfer window in the summer. But Xavi insists he has no doubts about his team’s quality.

“I told [director of football] Mateu [Alemany] not to play too much, that I’m happy with the family, it’s a fantastic group,” Xavi added. “We don’t know if we’ll be able to incorporate new players.

“I think we can be competitive. I’m happy with the leaders, we train at 100 per cent and it shows on the field. If we don’t touch anything, I’ll be very happy.”
