Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich lock horns at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night for a Champions League clash in Group A.

A seven-point lead at the top of the group table has ensured qualification into the last-16 for Bayern with two games to spare. Their status as Group A winners is also confirmed, ensuring them of a favorable tie for the knockout stages.

The same cannot be said for Atletico, though. The second-placed hosts are just two points above Lokomotiv Moscow in the last qualification spot and cannot afford a slip-up at home. No doubt they’ll fancy a bit of revenge on Bayern as well, having lost 4-0 the last time the two sides met in Munich back in October.

Atletico Madrid Form & Stats

A 1-0 victory over Valencia last weekend put Diego Simeone’s men in a sound position in the LaLiga title battle. They were utterly dominant at the Mestalla and defended well. In Luis Suarez’s absence, however, they lacked a focal point upfront and mostly resorted to outside shots before Toni Lato’s own goal sealed all three points.

The hopes of Suarez returning to face Bayern, meanwhile, are small at best. The striker has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 again, but Simeone refused to rule him out in his pre-match conference despite not selecting him in his 22-man squad. Although Joao Felix and Yannick Carrasco will probably return to the line-up.

Things may look promising in LaLiga, but not so much in the Champions League. Atletico have won just one of their four matches, having played out draws with Lokomotiv in their last two outings. Therefore, they can’t afford to lose on Tuesday and ideally need a win – especially if Lokomotiv beat RB Salzburg in the other Group A fixture.

But considering the Colchoneros have won their last two home meetings against Bayern 1-0 in the Champions League, along with the fact the visitors are set to rest key men, bodes well for them.

Key Team Stats
  • Won six of their last eight games in all competitions (D2).
  • Won their last two home games against Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League.
  • Unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 games in all competitions (L1).
  • Unbeaten in their last 20 home games in all competitions (W15 D5).
  • Kept clean sheets in their last four games in all competitions.

Bayern Munich Form & Stats

The big news coming from Munich was Hansi Flick’s decision to omit Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, and Leon Goretzka from his squad list. The head coach confirmed it during his pre-match conference on Monday.

Bayern, as previously mentioned, have already qualified for the last-16 stage and won Group A with two games to spare. So, amid their congested winter schedule, Flick has taken the opportunity to rest some star players.

The European champions have been in excellent form, having won all four of their group-stage fixtures. They’re also flying high in Bundesliga again, with seven wins in their opening nine matches (D1 L1).

Although Bayern have lost 15 of their last 29 away matches to Spanish sides in the past, including successive 1-0 defeats to Atletico.

  • Won 12 of their last 13 games in all competitions (D1).
  • Won their last seven away games in all competitions.
  • BTTS in their last seven games in all competitions.
  • Kept just four clean sheets in their 16 games in all competitions this season.
