Things go from bad to worse for the Gunners, as their big-money summer signing looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Mikel Arteta has announced that Thomas Partey will probably be unavailable for ‘the next few games’ after Arsenal discovered his thigh injury is worse than originally feared.

The Ghanian midfielder, who arrived in the summer from Atletico Madrid in a €50m transfer, hasn’t featured since coming off midway into the club’s 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on November 8.

He spent the international break recovering from his injury, but it appears his recovery is still a long way from over.

“I don’t think he will be with us in the next few games,” said Arteta on the club’s website.

“We have been missing a lot of players. We have many, many different issues, but I don’t like to use that excuse.

“At the end of the day, we are all the time really close to winning football matches and we end up losing it in the last few games.

“This is only in our hands with the players that we have. It is what we have to do. We cannot change that. It is in our hands.”

The Arsenal boss updated fans on Partey’s condition after Sunday’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Wolves.

Despite Gabriel canceling out Pedro Neto’s opener in the first-half, Daniel Podence grabbed a match-winner for Wolves before the break to condemn Arsenal to their worst start to a season since 1981 – 39 years ago.

Ironically, the defeat came a year to the day since the club sacked Arteta’s predecessor, Unai Emery, as manager.
