The Brazil international could return to the Premier League as he is reportedly back on Arsenal’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal has been advised against signing Philippe Coutinho by Nigel Winterburn, who feels the player’s standards have slipped ever since he left Liverpool.

After establishing himself as one of the best players in the world at Liverpool, Coutinho joined FC Barcelona for a hefty €160 million fee in January 2018.

The 28-year-old has been a shadow of his former self ever since as consistency and fitness issues have prevented him from having the desired impact at Camp Nou. He has been out of action since December due to a serious knee injury.

It has been reported Barcelona are open to offers for the Brazilian, who is said to be a transfer target for Arsenal, among a handful of other clubs.

However, a man who represented the club for three years from 1987 to 2000, believes the Gunners should keep faith in their emerging talents and shouldn’t pursue Coutinho.

“I wouldn’t go down that line, we’ve got a lot of young talent coming through,” Winterburn, in association with FreeSuperTips, told Goal.

“Unless he would be on the right wages or if there was a way to fit him in then it could be an option.

“It’s been touted around so much I don’t believe it’ll happen.

“Coutinho was very good at Liverpool, but since then I’ve not been impressed and I’m not convinced by it.”
