The Gunners have apparently found their main transfer target to bolster their backline.
Arsenal are reportedly leading the transfer race for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez.
Following their struggles for defensive consistency last season, the Gunners are keen to continue their summer recruitment by adding a new defender to their ranks.
According to 90min, Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to make a bid for Martinez ahead of the next season.
The Argentina international can play as a left-back and a defensive midfielder, in addition to his main role as a centre-back.
Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham are the other Premier League sides who are keeping tabs on Martinez.
The Magpies and the Spurs have failed to get their targeted defenders during the current transfer window, while the Blues hope to find replacements for Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
However, Arsenal remain in pole position to sign the Argentine star ahead of the next season. Having signed Porto’s Fabio Vieira earlier this week, the Gunners are now planning to focus on signing a new defender.
The new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is also a fan of his former Ajax player. However, English sources claim United are prioritizing a move for Pau Torres as their main defensive target.
