Everton suffered their second successive league defeat on the weekend, and Carlo Ancelotti points to a lack of focus on his players’ part.

It was a game of few opportunities, especially for the away side, when Newcastle United hosted Everton in Premier League matchday 7.

A total of eight shots, equally divided among the two teams, were registered on target at St. James Park, and it was the home side who made their limited chances count.

Calvert Dominic Lewin scored very late in the game but little did it matter as Callum Wilson’s two earlier strikes saw Everton lose 2-1.

“It’s where we missed today – the little details,” said Carlo Ancelotti after the match, as per the club’s official website. “We knew we didn’t have the usual quality up front but I said to my players, ‘Be focused defensively, don’t give a gift as we don’t want to lose’.

“It was not a good performance. We knew it would be this sort of game, without a lot of opportunities. We woke up later because we were 2-0 down, we had a good reaction but it was not enough.”

The Toffees are now winless in their last three games and sit second in the league table, three points behind local rivals Liverpool.

Up next for them is another tricky Premier League fixture against Manchester United at home on Saturday.
