The left-back was on target as the Catalan giants moved to within sight of the league leaders after a convincing victory on Wednesday.

FC Barcelona’s 3-0 La Liga win over Elche is beneficial for the team “a lot on the mental side”, says Jordi Alba.

Barcelona, who have been far from consistent this season, took to the pitch at Camp Nou on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Cadiz over the weekend.

Prior to that, Ronald Koeman’s men had suffered a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

But they were able to bounce back on Wednesday as they cruised past Elche and climbed up to third in La Liga standings, two points behind Real Madrid and five behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

“It helps a lot on the mental side,” Alba, who scored the third goal, told after the match, via Marca. “The draw [against Cadiz] the other day was honestly a tough blow for the whole team.

“If we’re not at 100 percent, we find it difficult to win. We struggled the other day and in the first half today too.

“I think everyone’s hunger has always been there. Things have evened out a lot in recent years too. We have to take responsibility.

“It’s tough times, but we have to be more united than ever now.”
