The referee in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau has gone viral for one of the most strangest running techniques.

A referee at the Africa Cup of Nations has gone viral on social media for an extremely bizarre running technique that left viewers in splits.

Referee Peter Waweru was in charge of overseeing Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, but it was his gait on the pitch that stole the show.

Waweru was seen running on the field with his arms and legs raised incredibly high with every stride, while also covering an insane amount of distance.

Fans on social media were left amazed at his unique running technique, with one commenting: “The referee thought he was part of the counter attack.”

While another said: “Get this man in the Barclays as soon as possible.”

The 39-year-old is also the Professor of Pure Mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya.

However, that wasn’t Waweru’s only contribution to the game. The Kenyan also chose to blow the most dramatic full-time whistle.

Umar Sadiq and William Troost-Ekong scored in the second half to maintain the Eagles’ unbeaten record in AFCON 2021. Nigeria finish top of Group D while Egypt come second after defeating Sudan in their final group game.
