The Super Eagles have appointed Jose Peseiro as their new manager ahead of the continental tournament.

Nigeria Football Federation sacked former coach Gernot Rohr in December. The Franco-German boss left the national team after spending five years in charge of the Super Eagles. Ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, NFF announced their new manager on Wednesday.

An official statement reads: “NFF’s Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr.”

Despite the appointment, interim manager Augustine Eguavoen remains in charge of the Super Eagles until the end of the AFCON.

Eguavoen will return to his former job as the team’s technical director after the tournament. Peseiro will prepare Nigeria for their crucial World Cup playoffs in March.

The 61-year-old worked as an assistant manager at Real Madrid before taking over Sporting Lisbon as their head coach. Since leaving the Portuguese club in 2005, El Ahly, Porto, Al Hilal, Braga, and Venezuela have been among his teams.

Nigeria will play in Group D of the AFCON alongside Sudan, Egypt, and Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles will start their campaign with a match against Egypt on January 11. They will then face Sudan before finishing the group stage with a game against Guinea-Bissau.
